Son of the Moonless Night

Series: The Turning Stone Chronicles, book three

Author: C.D. Hersh

Genre: Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Suspense Romance

Heat Level: Sensual

Release Date: May 27th, 2015

One trait you share with your heroine in this book?

Jillian, we are going to adjust this question since we are co-authors and one is female and the other male. Catherine thinks the trait she shares with the heroine Katrina is that both of them extremely dislike vampires. The trait Donald thinks he share with the hero Owen is his loyalty to his friends.

One thing you have learned as a writer this year?

As writers we’ve learned that we don’t catch everything we read aloud when proofing a manuscript. After multiple reads of Son of the Moonless Night we had Adobe Reader read our ARC to us and caught 27 more words we had either left out or misused. Lesson learned: Adobe Reader is now our best critique tool.

One writer, you'd LOVE to have lunch with?

Catherine would like to have lunch with Laura Ingalls Wilder. She loved her Little House on the Prairie series. Donald would love to have lunch with Sir Author Conan Doyle. He loves his character Sherlock Holmes.

Blurb:

Owen Todd Jordan Riley has a secret. He’s a shape shifter who has been hunting and killing his own kind. To him the only good shifter is a dead shifter. Revenge for the death of a friend motivates him, and nothing stands in his way . . . except Katrina Romanovski, the woman he is falling in love with.

Deputy coroner Katrina Romanovski has a secret, too. She hunts and kills paranormal beings like Owen. At least she did. When she rescues Owen from an attack by a werebear she is thrust back into the world she thought she’d left. Determined to find out what Owen knows about the bear, she begins a relationship meant to collect information. What she gets is something quite different-love with a man she suspects of murder. Can she reconcile his deception and murderous revenge spree and find a way to redeem him? Or will she condemn him for the same things she has done and walk away from love?

Excerpt:

A crash in the alley stopped Katrina Romanovski mid-stride. Like the October mist swirling in off the lake, her gypsy blood stirred sending her intuition into high gear. Something unnatural was happening.

Go see what’s wrong. She heard her father’s voice as clearly as if he stood next to her.

On the heels of his words came her mother’s pragmatic warning in clipped British tones. You know what curiosity killed. Katrina pushed the ever-present warning aside. Mom never approved of Dad’s supernatural hunts and even less of his drawing her into them.

Pulling the oversized cross she always wore out from under her shirt, Kat looked around for a weapon. Please, not a vampire. I hate vampires! A piece of wood sticking out of the trashcan at the front of the alley caught her eye.

Grabbing it, she broke the end off into a sharp point. The mist-filled air filtered the light from the single bulb over one of the alley doorways. The wind swirled the loose trash around making a quiet approach difficult. Sidestepping the paper, with the stake in one hand and holding the gun she took from her purse in the other hand, she crept into the alley.

A roar echoed against the buildings, the sound nearly sending her running. That roar wasn’t a vampire. It sounded more like an animal. Kat inched closer. In the yellow pool of light from the back door of the building, a black bear, over seven feet tall, reared on its back legs and swung its paw at the man standing at the edge of the light. He crashed to the ground, shirt torn open from the slashing claws. Blood covered the fabric, and he clasped his left hand over his shoulder to stem the flow. The bear bent toward him, teeth bared in a smile. A wicked smile.

Kat aimed her gun, but before she could pull the trigger, a shot rang out. The flash of gunpowder lit the face of the injured man. The blast reverberated against the buildings. With an enraged bellow, the bear staggered backward against the wall. Shaking his head, the animal dropped to all four paws. Weaving like a drunk, he lumbered toward his attacker. The man took aim again, shooting the animal between the eyes. Animal and human collapsed on the dirty, littered pavement.

As she started to move forward, Kat’s gypsy senses crawled over her skin like angry red ants. As she slipped back into the shadows, the bear shed fur. Changing size. Then, finally, turning into a man.

Shape shifters. Her stake wasn’t any good against them, and her bullets weren’t silver. This one appeared dead anyway. Had the wounded man seen the shift? Tossing the stake aside, she paused by the shifter and quickly moved to the wounded man. Out cold. Still human.

When she touched him, his eyelids fluttered open. “Did I get it?”

“What?”

“The bear.”

Recently a friend pointed out that perhaps I should blog more often, so I’m going to give this a go by blogging about things of interest, writing, books I’ve read, tea, moose, and my health.

To kick this off, each month, I’m going to post a blog about my journey to lose 75 pounds by May 2016.

My problem is I do really well for a while, then slack, then dive into Stouffers Mac and Cheese like I need that cheesy goodness to live.

As a writer, I tend to sit and stare at my computer screen all day, longing for words and awesome books for pour from my fingers. While this does happen mostly, I do need to raise the ole’ blood pressure above two beats per minute, at times.

Here’s my gameplan:

·      I will remove all preconceived notions of what to eat when

·      I will eat more fiber and protein

·      I will drink more water

·      I will remove processed foods

·      I will eat no snacks

·      No food after 7pm

·      Processed whites, like bread and pasta are a no-no

·      Work out at 6:30am every morning- This is where A.D. Ellis and Lisa Caviness majorly influence me

Menu:

Breakfast- fruit and protein

Lunch -Veg and Protein

Midday- Tea with Protein supplement

Dinner- Soup

I shall not tell how much I currently weigh, but just to be clear, I could go without cheeseburgers for a week and still live for quite a while.

If you’d care to join me on this journey to health, leave a comment below. I’ll check in again on the 27th of June. Cross your fingers I’ll be down by a few pounds, at least. By blogging about this, I’m holding myself accountable to you, dear reader, so I’ll try not to let you or me down.

Celebrate La Nora Mangano's new Release today! Love Encounters - Book 1 in the Ghost Hunters series.
Leave a comment below for a chance to win an ebook copy of Love Encounter

One trait you share with your heroine in this book?

The one trait I share with Shelly is that we are both part of an interracial relationship and we met our husbands at work.

One thing you have learned as a writer this year?

The whole "show" and not "tell" when writing is a very difficult skill to hone.  I think I have a better grasp of it now but, as with everything, practice makes almost perfect.

One writer, you'd LOVE to have lunch with?

I would love to sit down and have lunch with Catherine Mann, near her home (because she lives in Florida close to the beach).  I've met Mrs. Mann several times and it always seemed rushed but someday, it would be great to have a nice and relaxing lunch just to talk about life.  She is so down to earth and a real "girlfriend".

Love Encounters Blurb:

Encountering ghosts and spirits was one thing, but what happens when you encounter love?

Shelly Barnes loved working for her father's business, Barnes Paranormal Society of qualified ghost hunters.  When the assignments began to be more than BPS could handle, they had little choice but to expand the business.

Her father, and owner of BPS, Ed Barnes, prided his company for being  a successful, minority owned company that started as his hobby and turned into one of the leading paranormal societies in the surrounding states.    When he hired, Kevin Bradford, he knew that with years of experience under his belt Kevin would make a great addition to the team.

Pairing Shelly and Kevin as partners was a stroke of genius and when she fell hard for her partner, she was hesitant to flaunt their interracial relationship status to the world, and she didn't know why.

Insecurities from her past threatened her future with Kevin and she knew that  if she didn't overcome them, she'd end up losing the one man she'd ever loved.

Excerpt:

Kevin saw the telltale sign before Shelly fainted. At the sight of blood, the color drained from her face and she swayed in his direction. He prepared himself to catch her before she hit the floor, and he did. Scooping her up, he placed her on the sofa. He hurried to the kitchen sink to run cold water over the wound before grabbing a couple of Band-Aids from the medicine cabinet in his bathroom. When he returned, Shelly looked like she was just taking a nap.

“You’re so pretty, Shelly, even sleeping,” he whispered as he pushed a strand of curled hair from her face. “Shelly? Come on, it’s time to wake up.” He squatted on his haunches beside her and stroked her hand with his thumb. “Shell?”

Her eyelids began to twitch, followed by the slow parting lashes. Once her eyes were opened, she focused on Kevin’s smile. She glanced around to discover that she was lying down. “Oh, crap.” Everything was coming back to her and she began to push herself up on her elbows, but Kevin’s halting hand on her shoulder prevented that.

“Welcome back.” He straightened to a stand. “Don’t move just yet. First get your bearings and I’ll get you some water.” After pulling out a bottle of water from the refrigerator, he offered it to her and sat on the sofa near her feet. He watched her sit up, with no side effects and sip water. “Not a fan of blood, I take it?”

“God, this is so embarrassing.”

“Don’t be. I don’t particularly like much of it either.”

“You didn’t faint at the sight of it.”

“Only, because someone had to catch you.” He smiled. “Besides, it was my fault for not feeding you earlier. I made you work all day without offering you anything but a beer. My mother would be ashamed of me.”

“Thanks for trying to take blame but ever since my mother— Since I was a little girl, I’ve had issues with blood. I’m okay now.”

The door buzzed. Kevin stood up. “Lucky for us, food is now a non-issue. Let’s just eat and relax, okay?” He opened the door, paid for the pizza, and sat it down on the coffee table.

“That smells delicious.” She inhaled and looked at the monster large box.

“See, hunger may have played a role in your checking out.” He sat two plates and the red pepper flakes on the table and opened the box.

“I’m sorry for reacting like that before, Kevin.”

“Eh, it happens.” He slid a couple of slices on her plate before grabbing his own. His finger was fully wrapped in Band-Aid and no blood could be seen leaking through.

After eating more than half the pizza, each relaxed their body further into the sofa. She noticed that as the sun sunk lower, the lights in his apartment glowed brighter. Impressed by the solar-powered gadget, she glanced Kevin’s way. “You really have a great place here.”

“Yeah, I think I’m going to like it. Hey, if you want to call it a day and go home, I’d understand. I didn’t expect the help but I do appreciate it. I got twice as much done than I thought I would and I’m just about finished.”

Bio:
I started reading romance novels in high school when a friend introduced me to a Harlequin book and from then I read them every spare moment I had. This was also around the time I developed a passion to write my own stories, creating happily ever afters and I’ve been writing ever since.
I write contemporary romance and paranormal.  Most of  my novels turn into a 3-6 book series.  I’ve written a couple of stand-alone contemporaries but in the back of my mind, I'm thinking about adding to them.  I think that makes me a serial series writer!
I have way too much fun creating people and building situations for them that has led me to accomplishing my true goal.  Publishing.
If you have aspirations of publishing a book, I encourage you to take steps towards making that happen.  A great start is to look up your local Romance Writers of America (RWA) chapter and attend a couple of meetings to see if it's for you.  This organization has helped me learn not only the business of writing but the craft as well.
